In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”
Jesus tells his people that they should believe in him and then he gives them his end game for them. His goal for his followers is that they would go to a place he has prepared for them. That they would all be with him in this place he has especially for them.
Often, we get the misguided notion that Jesus goal is something like your best life now. We’re told by pastors on tv and in churches that God wants your life to be great and he wants everything to go well. Is that Jesus ultimate goal though? Here he seems to say his plan for us isn’t at all in this life, but the next.
This doesn’t mean God won’t work in our favor now, and it doesnt mean things can’t go well in this life. However, it does point our ultimate expectations to something different. It points us to the greatness and glory of the next life over this one. He’s not working, suffering, and dying so we can have a great time here on earth. He’s sacrificing everything so that in the next life we can be in the place he made for us.
