Jonah ran from God. Everyone expected it. He was the reviled prophet from the northern kingdom so everyone was pretty content knowing he had failed God so greatly. “What did you expect from a prophet of the north”?
It can be easy to label people. It can be easy to see someone’s past, see their struggle, and think they’re not good enough for God. Jonah was known as a failure and he lived up to it. Yet, God wasn’t done with him. God still wanted great things from him AND for him.
It’s easy to look at people and see Jonah the way Judah did. It’s easy to see a failure and a broken man. It’s easy to see someone who seems less than worthy. God doesn’t, though. His grace was extended to Jonah and ours should be too.
Jesus said love one another the way I have loved you. God loved us even when we were not worth it. God loved us when we were failures. God loved us at our worst so that we could be empowered to love others at theirs.
