Can I exhaust God’s grace? Jonah’s story tells me no. It shows me a man who went way further than I ever have, who did things way worse than I’ve done, and still, God loved him. It’s like Paul. Paul told the story of his life before Jesus and how terrible he had lived. He was religious but his heart was evil. He was persecuting and hurting those who followed God. He did it in God’s name. He was the worst of the worst. And he says that God only saved him for one reason, to show everyone else there was hope. If God could save someone like Paul, then he could easily still love you.
I think Jonah is another example like Paul. He shows us that if God will chase after Jonah who characteristically and unapologetically rebelled against everything God wanted for him, he will never stop chasing after you. His mercy cannot be exhausted. He’ll never give up on you. You can’t turn him away. He is way too in love with you.
